June 4th in Hong Kong * Senegal !This week World Vibes commemorates the 22nd anniversary of June 4th with songs mostly from Hong Kong, and mostly experimental ! We then showcase some of the new musical creations coming out of Senegal in West Africa.
We start our commemoration of June 4th in Hong Kong with the entire Cantopop industry's recording of "All for Freedom" '為自由' in May 1989. We then sample other songs about June 4th released through the years, of which not a few by Hong Kong experimental musicians Blackbird 黑鳥 and Lenny Kuok 郭達年, Wong Chi Chung 黃志淙 and Endeavour 民藝復興, and Peter Suart 彼得小話. We end as we started with the song 'Nothing to my name''一无所有', in parody by Qinghua University students in 1989 at the beginning, and the 1986 original by Cui Jian 崔健 at the end. One from the heart.
The next hour showcases some of the hot new creations coming out of Senegal, be they fusions of mbalax, gansta, folk, 'nu soulo', rural music or western styles. You'll hear new sounds from Senegalese stars such as Zeina, Thione Seck, Viviane N'Dour, Daara J Family, Cheikh Lô, Diogal, Abass Abass, Carlou D, and more. Get ready for a revelation !
